The body of former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who died after suffering a cardiac arrest during a lecture at the IIM-Shillong on Monday, was flown to Delhi early Tuesday morning by a special aircraft.The funeral will be held in Rameswaram at 11 am on Thursday. .Several leaders including Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and senior IAF officials joined in paying tribute to India’s ‘Missile Man’ whose departure has plunged the nation into overwhelming grief. A P J Abdul Kalam born on 15 October 1931 at Rameshawaram in Tamilnadu in a poor family became an 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007. He studied physics and aerospace engineering in Tamil Nadu.He spent the previous four decades as a scientist and science administrator, Particularly at the Defence Research and Development Organization(DRDO) including Indian Space Research Organization(ISRO). He is known as the Missile Man of India for his work on the development of ballistic missile and launch vehicle technology. He also played a pivotal organizational, technical and political role in India’s Pokhran-IInuclear tests in 1998, the first since the original nuclear test by India in 1974.He was awarded the nation’s top awards including the Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Bharat Ratna.

“Dr Kalam made significant contribution in developing India’s first indigenous Satellite Launch Vehicle and made India an exclusive member of the space club. He is popularly known as the ‘Missile Man of India’, Dr Kalam was responsible for the development and operationalisation of Agni and Prithvi missiles. He gave thrust to self-reliance in defence systems by introducing the Light Combat Aircraft,” said the resolution. “Dr Kalam was passionate about transforming society through technology, in particular by inspiring the youth of India to harness science and technology for human welfare,”.
