On 11 July 2006, Mumbai train bombings were a series of seven bomb blasts that took place over a period of 11 minutes on the Suburban Railway in Mumbai.

Five out of twelve convicts were sentenced to death on Wednesday for planting bombs on local trains on July 11 in 2006. Seven out of them were awarded life imprisonment by special MCOCA court for the blasts in seven packed trains in a span of 11 minutes that killed 189 people.

Reacting to the verdict, Gulzar Azmi, Secretary of Jamiat-ul Ulema, Maharashtra which provides legal aid to the convicts said that we will move to High Court.

Special Judge Yatin D Shinde had last week concluded hearing arguments on the quantum of sentence when prosecution demanded death penalty for 8 of the 12 accused while it sought life imprisonment for the remaining four.

Pronouncing the verdict, the special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court judge Yatin Shinde sentenced to death Faisal Sheikh, Asif Khan, Kamal Ansari, Ehtesham Sidduqui and Naveed Khan who planted the bombs in various trains.

The other seven convicts — Mohammed Sajid Ansari, who prepared the electrical circuits for the bombs, Mohammed Ali, who provided his Govandi residence to make the bombs, Dr Tanveer Ansari, one of the conspirators, and Majid Shafi, Muzzammil Shaikh, Sohail Shaikh and Zamir Shaikh who provided logistical support – were sentenced to life.
