NASA Released New Images From Pluto Mission – New Horizons :
NASA on Wednesday revealed images from the New Horizons spacecraft that flew by Pluto on Tuesday. “Yesterday, America’s space program took another historic leap for humankind. Today, the New Horizons team is bringing what was previously a blurred point of light into focus,” spokesman Dwayne Brown said.
New images of Pluto have started to arrive, after NASA’s New Horizons mission reached the icy dwarf planet for the first time in human history this week.
A colourful image of Pluto and its largest moon, Charon, was released Tuesday. While the yellow, brown and blue in the shot don’t reflect the true colours of the planetary bodies, they do represent their varied composition, including ice and craters.
The first images sent back to earth show that the moon Charon is “active” and there are mountains in the Kuiper Belt, according to Dr. Alan Stern, the mission’s principal scientist, speaking at a press conference Wednesday.
New Horizons co-investigator Cathy Olkin said the new images of Charon “blew our socks off.”
The New Horizons team has jokingly been referring to the north pole of Charon as “Mordor,” Olkin said.
“There is so much interesting science in this one image alone . . . we’ve been saying Pluto did not disappoint; Charon did not disappoint either.”
