Deputy Mayor Tikender Panwar said the Himachal capital will be among country’s pioneering cities to provide free Wi-Fi facility as part of a pilot project. “Locals and tourists can avail this facility between May 31 and June 7. The move coincides with the Shimla Summer Festival, which begins at the historic Ridge in June,” he announced Shimla to provide free Wi-Fi.

Free Wi-Fi, the deputy mayor  said, would enhance the brand image of Shimla, which is in the list of 100 smart cities proposed by the Centre. “shimla to provide free wi-fi facility, the Municipal Corporation has installed seven routers (access points) at various locations such as Padam Dev Complex, State Library, near HPMC counter, Ashiana Hotel, Gaiety Theatre, Old SMC building and Scandal Point. The range of each router would be an approximate 150m radius,” Panwar said.

To avail the free service, a passkey would be sent to those who registered mobile numbers. The mobile numbers will be registered when one enters the Wi-Fi zone. An SMS will be sent with details of the facility. When one logs on, the number will be checked by an authentication centre, before the passkey is sent back to the mobile number.
