Story behind Maha Shivaratri

MAHA SHIVRATRI is celebrated as LORD SHIVA marriage day. Firstly LORD SHIVA was married to SATI also called as DAKSHAYANI. The King DAKSHA and Queen PRASUTI desired for a daughter. They with the guidelines from saints in the forest worshipped Adi-Parashakti for their wish to fulfill. Later Adi Parashakti had a desired boon for her and took birth as their daughter. The Goddess gave them their consent and also warns them if they insult her, she will take away their consent and disowns them by destroying. When Sati was child, she adores the tales and bravery of SHIVA and grew up to womanhood. Then she desires to marry one and only SHIVA.

She even rejected all the proposals of other great kings brought by her father Daksha. Then she forsook all the luxuries of her father’s palace and retired to a forest to win the regard of the ecstatic Shiva. She devotes herself and worship Shiva by fasting. She only consumes a single leaf a day in the forest and offers her prayers. At last Lord Shiva was pleased and made her his bride. This marriage is not accepted by her father King Daksha. Then Sati left her parental home and made a home with Shiva in Kailash. Once King Daksha organized a prayer ritual and invited all Gods, Goddesses and priests but not Sati and Shiva. One day Sati came to know about puja and asked Shiva to accompany her but Shiva refused to go and even asked her not to go. But Sati convinced him and went to her father’s place. There Daksha did not even allow Sati to enter the puja and insulted her. Then Sati got angry and fired herself. Shiva got to know about his bride’s death and killed Daksha in angry.
